Not a Whole Lot of Sex

April 17th, 2008 by Partha-sarathi dasa

From a class Jayadvaita Maharaja gave in
Dallas, Texas, a couple of years ago.

It was the morning Bhagavatam class, and Jayadvaita Swami had been asked to
give it. The section of the Bhagavatam that the Dallas yatra was presently
in was incidentally the 5th Canto, the chapter titled “The Forest of
Material Enjoyment”. If you do not know about this chapter, it is an
extremely heavy chapter describing the sufferings of family life.

After reading the verse and purport, Jayadvaita Swami looked up from the
book and asked nonchalantly “Not a whole lot of good news here, is there?”

He proceeded on to talk about sex life, and if it is really worth it. He
said “Let’s suppose you get married. Let’s say you want to have four kids.
If you intend to not fall down, that is, to have sex only for procreating
children, then you will get to have sex only about 12 times or so. Let’s
analyze that.”

“So you and your wife both chant 50 rounds before having sex. Let’s say that
it takes three times to become pregnant. So, you get to have sex once a
month for three months. After that, no more sex until at least nine months.
And generally, she will want to wait at least a year after the first child
to even think about having another child. So that’s about two years before
you will get to have sex again.”

“So a year after having the first child, she might start to want another. So
you both chant 50 rounds, and it takes three times to become pregnant. So
that is sex once a month, for three months. After the second child, the wife
might want to wait a couple of years before even thinking about having
another child.”

“So let’s say that you want to have four children. So that means that you
get to have sex only about 12 times over the course of a ten year period. So
that’s not a whole lot of sex, now is it? It really makes me wonder, is it
really even worth it?”

Jayadvaita Maharaja ki jaya!
